Michael Jai White is a martial artist and actor who has played in a number of films including The Dark Knight, and Universal Soldier. He has earned seven black belts in seven different styles of martial arts, including Kyokushin, Kobud, Tae Know Do, Goju Ryu, Tang Soo Do, Wushu, and Shotokan. Michael began his training at the young age of seven in his hometown of Brooklyn, New York and continues training today well into his forties. He is known worldwide for his almost flawless physique and speed and many people try and fashion their work out based on his. Following are some of the key points in Michael’s workout and fitness routine.
Michael Jai White does not believe in allowing his body to become used to any one routine. He feels that switching things up a lot in his routine will help his work out stay challenging and difficult. If a person does the same thing repeatedly, his/her body will adapt and stop having to work hard to keep up. For this reason Michael changes things up by doing a lot of free style martial arts moves in addition to other cardio activities. One day he may work on the upper portion of his body, and the next the lower. He has stated that his work outs last about four hours per day. He works out at home as well as in his local gym, in addition to working out in the park whenever possible as he enjoys working out in the open air.
In order to keep his body fit and in perfect shape, Michael doesn’t use heavy weights during training but rather, uses lighter weights with higher reps. Heavy weights will cause a lot of bulk that will surely get in the way if someone is trying to maintain speed as a martial artist. Michael likes to keep his muscles loose at all times and stay in condition so that he will not slow down in his martial arts techniques.
Another important aspect of the Michael Jai White work out is the diet he follows. He has stated that his diet consists of 70% protein and his rather comical gauge for determining which foods are proteins is, “whatever food has had a parent is a protein”. He does not eat complex carbohydrates and stays away from anything that has processed sugars. In addition, he restricts fats and has admitted to becoming quite ornery at times due to a tasteless diet. This is where major dedication comes in and to be an athlete of his caliber there are many sacrifices that must be made. However, he does still enjoy the occasional night out at his favorite Japanese restaurant from time to time.
In addition to training hard and eating the right foods, Michael takes in a whopping three gallons of water per day. The main characteristics that make Michael’s workout and fitness regime are balance and discipline. Without these two factors, no diet or fitness program will be successful.

Isn’t “light weight – high reps” exactly what body builders do to put on bulk?
